I'm a huge fan of fantasy and I've become quite the fan of Asian-inspired fantasy recently. Jade City and Jade War are great examples of this and The Poppy War by R.F. Epic fantasy is a genre that often features whole new realised worlds, creative creatures not in our own world, and, more often than not, a big journey. Lord of the Rings arguably shot this genre into the mainstream. Robert Jordan’s The Eye of the World and subsequent series fleshed out the genre and realised its potential. (more…)

I’d heard a lot about Jade City by Fonda Lee before I picked it up. It had begun to build up some incredible hype when the second one came out and people remembered just how good the first is. I feel that the hype for a first book gets a second wind when the sequel comes out as people didn’t want to hype it too early in case the rest of the series was bad. I do plan on reading the second at some point. However, this review is about the first. (more…)
